They never had nor have a title to the lands they claim are theirs. That treaty does not give ownership. 45,000 thousand people hardly a nation make let alone 49. At best they are a linguistic tribe with 49 communities.

The so called paternalism of the government was taking care of people who were not able fend for themselves in the face of european immigration and would have otherwise disappeared through war or attrition. ( example: Why did the 7 nations move out of the US.)

How can anyone discuss properly any negotiations if one side is grossly misrepresenting it's side.

Time they faced reality and proposed meaningful requests. Thay is the difficulty we face.
