I think it's a very routine practise, even if it's not as often mentioned in an announcement. They pretty much have to stop drilling during freeze-up, or the equipment will be frozen into the ground. After the ground is solid, they go back onto the frozen surface. Fixed wing aircraft can't safely operate during freeze-up either. Most camps use the opportunity to take an extended Christmas break. It's best for morale, too.
