You messed up the math a little bit there, my friend. There is no triangle with individual sides of lengths 1000, 176, and 1441.

For a maximum penetration of 1200 metres, set that as your hypotenuse. Dip angle is from horizontal, so theta in the equation is (90 minus dip).

Adjacent over hypotenuse = cosine theta, and you want to solve for the length of the adjacent side, which we'll call x.

x/1200 = cos (40) for a 50 degree dip

x = 1200 cos (40) = 919 metres

x/1200 cos (30) for a 60 degree dip

x= 1200 cos (30) = 1039 metres
