To add to what Ease said, the appeals were taken on underlying matters that led to the jury verdict. One, for example, was a portion of the Markman ruling --- since these kinds of rulings are not immediately appealable (i.e., at the time rendered), any such appeal must be taken at the end of the case in order to preserve the issue in the appellate court.
