You are making a big deal of this conference. My point is although going to the conference is good for the company; not going there is not a disaster.

Don't forget it is only a 20-30 minutes lecture and his paper will be publish though the organizers of the conference 2-3 months later. 

He can publish his article through  many other ways, if it helps the company.
