“It’s expected that data centers will begin adopting the next generation of switches, with 400-gig ports, in 2019,” says Wright. “The physical form-factor inside data centers can’t be just an adaption of today’s super-high-bandwidth optical transceivers, because those are made for long-distance, metro-area communications and so are big and consume lots of energy.”
Ayar aims to have a demo of the 400-gig part by the end of next year, with production expected in 2019. Wright tells me Ayar is targeting several different kinds of customer: “warehouse-scale data centers,” meaning, cloud computing facilities of the kind run by Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT); supercomputing facilities; and suppliers of communications components and also makers of communications equipment.
