simplifiying the metaphor (by a factor of several million, LOL): it is easier to make fancy headlights for the car, than it is to make the nuclear engine for the car.

but if I have customers for fancy headlights? I'll sell them their headlights, while I also work on the fancy engine for my other customers.

maybe that's approximately right. dunno.
