Marten Falls FN did the grading for the landing strip without obtaining a permit to affect the environment. They levelled an esker, which just so happened to be on migration route (high ground) for endangered caribou herds. Noront and the other supporters of the landing strip development did not know that permits had not been obtained to do the work, but a commercial competitor to Marten Falls Logistics knew that. So they filmed themselves landing an aircraft on the unapproved, unpermitted landing strip, and then filed a complaint about the illegal airstrip, forcing the government to officially shut the project down.
