One more rule on that. You have to wait 30 days before buying the same security, or your capital loss will be voided under the superficial loss rule. Basically, you can't sell something to create a capital loss, only to buy it up again immediately afterwards. They settled on 30 days waiting period as a reasonable compromise in a free marketplace.
