You make some good points but think of this. If we have 2 running against each other, it would be 2 of our very respected posters. There would then be a loser. I would hate to have one of our best members who just happens to come in second place feel that agony of defeat. This would be extreme but it could wind up a very lopsided win for one.

This all changes if one puts their name forward willingly having weighed the risks of losing.

Otherwise the board could just reach consensus.
