I would like to add to this Been There. One of the precipitating factors for Inco to buy VB was the fact that Falconbridge was already producing nickel cheaper then them by about 25 cents per pound. If Falconbridge got their hands on VB they would further decrease their production cost to somewhere around 70 cents below INCO. This calculation by INCO engineers ultimatly seeled the deal for INCO that it could not let Falconbridge purchase VB and forced them to pay more than they were originally willing to save their market share...So I believe you are right, Reason # 2 may prove more valuable to us.
