I'm not sure either but if the TFSA follows the same rules an an RRSP, stocks transferred in kind into the plan will trigger a gain (if applicable) but losses cannot be claimed. Not sure of the logic behind that, but that's the way it is.

The TFSA may be different but I don't know.
