  • In general, at least in the early innocent days of a company or partnership, secrecy sometimes simply comes about because no one happened to know about what you were or are doing. For example, when Larry Page and Sergey Brin where developing the algorithms that are what became Google Search, few would be able to observe their work because it was not tangible, unlike a car or gadget. However, if someone alongside them had happened to see what they were doing, quietly slipped away to another company or started their own, Google may never exist today and the world may have been a very diffeent place. A similar situation to that faced by the two twins who were involved in the early days of Facebook. And guess who got all the glory and riches? The one who ran with the idea, not the one with the idea! (Assuming that is what happened - that was an analogy only.)
  • Another reason not to leak information is because if even a minor innovation is realised by a competitor, it may not be implemented well, therefore discrediting the concept and damaging the market potential for your own product. This actually happened when the Newton was launched. Although an Apple innovation, the execution was poor and so the whole PDA market was mothballed until Palm Inc. got it right a few years later with the (superb) Pilot.
