My understanding is that disinterested means impartial.

Not 'not interested'.

'Not interested' is the same as uninterested.

Disinterested means something else.

Cut and pasted from elsewhere: The adjective disinterested means "impartial" and "without bias." Uninterested means "indifferent" or "unconcerned."
