In the stock market a loss is as valuable as a gain.

In Canada you can store net losses and use them against net gains that go back three years. If there aren't any to use against from the 3 previous years, you can put them away and use against future gains until the losses are all used up.

"Net capital losses arising in any year can be carried back three tax years, or carried forward indefinitely"
