János Kóka, who chairs an ad hoc parliamentary committee for the Nabucco pipeline, has proposed that Egypt should join the International Nabucco Board, which provides political support to the Nabucco project, MTI reported.
Kóka told the press at a conference held jointly with Hungary's Nabucco envoy Mihály Bayer in Budapest that he had proposed that Egypt be invited to join the International Nabucco Board during his visit to the country.
During talks between Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in October 2009, Bajnai indicated that Hungary considers Egypt's participation in the Nabucco project to be very important.
It was noted at Wednesday's press conference that Egypt has natural gas reserves of 2,800 billion cubic meters, and it exports gas from two (LNG) terminals and through a pipeline leading to Syria with capacity of only 1 billion cubic meters, which they intend to extend to Turkey.
Ambassador Bayer expressed hope that the final investor decision could be taken by the end of this year and construction work could begin in 2011.
In addition to Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, Austria's OMV, Romania's Transgaz, Turkey's Botas, Bulgaria's Bulgargaz, and Germany's RWE are also involved in the Nabucco project, while France's Gaz de France has indicated its intention to participate. Gas deliveries through the pipeline could start in 2014-2015. Maximum capacity is scheduled to be reached in 2020, when 31 billion cubic meters of gas could be pumped through the pipeline.
