Re: Good Volume

The way to get rich is to buy when nobody wants it, and sell when everybody needs it. If Teck forsees a need for copper in three years, they are likely to go forward with development. Construction costs should be lower while pessimism is in the air. Whether that means a buyout, or dividends probably larger than our current share price in a few years, we have to wait and see.

Re: Tax Withheld on "Return Of Capital"/Dividend

I suppose it would have been the transfer agent. But if the transfer agent did it, they are working for etrade, and etrade should have some leverage to get them to do their job properly. You have no control over the transfer agent, but if etrade cares about customer service they should get them to correct their mistake. Good Luck!

Re: Tax Withheld on "Return Of Capital"/Dividend

Liddy and CuuVenturer,

Canada withholds tax on taxable dividends paid to non-Canadians, and that's what was done with my dividend for shares held at Scotttrade, to the tune of 25%. I sent an e-mail to Scottrade explaining the situation, with a link to the copper Fox news release describing the dividend as non-taxable return of capital, and the next day the previously withheld amount showed up in my account.

Should you be unable to get it back, you can get a tax credit for the amount withheld on your US income taxes. Of course you will pay US taxes on the dividend.

Re: Anyone still waiting to see the dividend? - Fidelity in the US

That really stinks. I'd get on the phone to the broker and/or the copper fox office, and trace down where the money is.

I got my "25% foreign tax deduction" back. I sent Scottrade an e-mail with a link to the announcement that said it was not taxable and they credited it to my account.

Re: Anyone still waiting to see the dividend? - Fidelity in the US

but no 25% foreign tax withholding? I think there shouldn't be since it's a return of capital, and the foreign tax withholding is imposed by Canada. Dividends from earnings paid by Canadian companys to non-Canadians are taxed in this way. Probably somebody at Scottrade or whoever takes care of things in Canada for them goofed. I'll call them.

I got the dividend at Scottrade, but they withheld "25% foreign tax." Did that happen to other US folks?
