A380 Engine Problem

Terror at 10,000 feet: Plane forced to land after passengers hear loud bang and fireball coming from the engine

  • Passengers say they saw two-metre long flames coming from the Airbus A380's engine

  • The flight was forced to turn around and return to Sydney Airport

  • Emirates says it is investigating the cause of the incident and that passenger safety is 'paramount'

By Steve Nolan

Terrified passengers on a Dubai-bound flight have spoken of their horror after a loud bang shook the plane and flames could be seen coming from the engine.

The Emirates Airbus A380 was forced to land less than an hour after take-off from Sydney after what the airline are describing as an 'engine fault'.

Passengers described seeing two-metre long flames licking from the plane's engine after the incident which happened when the aircraft was still climbing and had reached around 10,000 ft.

The Dubai-bound Emirates A380 grounded at Sydney Airport after being forced to land

Passengers on the plane say that they heard a loud bang and spotted flames coming from the engine

John Fothergill, of Auckland, New Zealand, said that he spotted the flames after having felt the plane shake.

He said: 'I thought it could have been lightning but then we saw flames come out of the engine.

'The whole interior of the A380 lit up.'

Fellow passenger Ross Clarke added that he heard a loud bang.

He said: 'We were told by the pilot that something had gone wrong on the starboard engine, number three engine.'

Passengers also described how airline staff appeared panicked by the mid-air drama. Flight attendants are reported to have dashed to the aircraft's windows after the noise to see what had happened.

Dr Amal Aburawi told the Daily Telegraph in Australia: 'Everyone was running left and right, no one knowing what's happening.'

The pilot is said to have contacted Emirates headquarters to ask if the flight could continue on its route, but was ordered to turn back and land at Sydney.

The A380 landed safely and fortunately no one was injured in the incident.

All passengers have since been booked on to alternative flights.

A statement released by the airline today said: 'Emirates flight EK413 from Sydney to Dubai turned back shortly after take-off due to an engine fault.

'Passengers were re-booked on alternative flights or offered overnight hotel accommodation.

'Emirates is still investigating the cause of the fault and apologises for any inconvenience caused to its customers, however the safety of our passengers and crew is of the highest priority and will not be compromised.'

There has only been one other incident involving an Airbus A380 since the model's launch in 2007.

In November 2010, a Qantas flight from Singapore Changi Airport to Sydney suffered an engine failure forcing the flight to return to Singapore.

Fortunately, no one was injured in that incident despite debris falling on the island of Batam.

Qantas grounded all A380s for a day while that incident was investigated.

It was later attributed to an oil leak.

Airbus delivers over Boeing

Nice Read.....Enjoy

Airbus Sees Surprise Win in Jet Deliveries Over Boeing

Airbus SAS said it may surpass Boeing Co. (BA), its only rival, in jetliner deliveries for the 10th straight year even though the U.S. planemaker is ahead through the third quarter and has a higher full-year forecast.

"Regarding deliveries, I think we are still ahead of Boeing," Airbus Chief Executive Officer Fabrice Bregier said in an interview yesterday with Pimm Fox on Bloomberg Television's "Taking Stock" in New York.

In the year through Sept. 30, Chicago-based Boeing had handed over 436 aircraft to customers, compared with 405 by Toulouse, France-based Airbus. Boeing has been forecasting 585 to 600 deliveries for the full year, against the target Airbus has given for 570. Airbus, the civil aircraft unit of European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co. (EAD), overtook Boeing in 2003 and has held the top spot for annual deliveries since then.

"We might just beat Boeing" for 2012 deliveries, Mary Anne Greczyn, a spokeswoman for Airbus in Washington, said in an e-mail. "We're looking good so far."

A spokesman for Boeing wasn't immediately available for comment after business hours yesterday.

Both planemakers, whose duopoly is set to be challenged by new competitors in Canada and China, are building jets at record rates and boosting production even higher to meet demand for more fuel-efficient aircraft. Deliveries are key as that's when airlines make the final payments, which are usually a large chunk of the purchase price.

Order Forecasts

While Boeing had about a 2-to-1 lead in orders through the third quarter, Airbus expects to be ahead in the two years through 2012, Bregier said. That period encompasses when both companies began offering a revamped version of their single- aisle jets, the most widely flown planes.

Airbus expects to have sold about 2,000 planes in 2011 and 2012 combined, Bregier said. The company began offering its single-aisle A320neo in December 2010. It won total orders for 1,419 of all its planes last year and had sold 437 through September this year, stripping out cancellations.

Boeing, which doesn't give order forecasts, began offering its 737 Max late last year. It had net orders for 805 jets in 2011 and for 879 through Oct. 2 this year.

"We will still lead this market," Bregier said.

Airbus sees demand for 1,000 aircraft in Germany

PARIS: Airbus sees demand from Germany for more than 1,000 new passenger aircraft and freighters over the next two decades, worth $148 billion, as German air travel is growing, the planemaker said on the opening day of the ILA Berlin Air Show on Tuesday.

The figures were part of the planemaker's global market forecast which also predicted average annual traffic growth of 4.1 percent for Europe in the period while routes to the Middle East should rise 5.4 percent and Asia-Pacific, Africa and Latin America together could grow 4.6 percent.

For Germany, new passenger and freight aircraft will include 690 single-aisle jetliners, more than 230 twin-aisle medium to long-range wide-body planes and close to 100 very large airliners such as the A380, Airbus said in a statement.

"German airlines will take more aircraft than any other European country and globally is one the top five countries," said Chris Emerson, SVP Future Programmes and Market Strategy. "This demand is driven by Germany's position as a major aviation gateway for its own people and for globally connecting passengers."
