Principal Geotechnical Engineer

We are currently seeking an individual in the role of: Geotechnical Engineer

Reporting to the Manager, Geotechnical Engineering, the Principal Geotechnical Engineer will advise on geotechnical engineering activities for projects, operations, and legacy assets at Teck as coordinated through the Project Development Group (PDG). The Principal Geotechnical Engineer will be involved and assist in the ongoing activities of the PDG, and other corporate groups as appropriate, by providing technical support for operations, governance, and business development opportunities. The Principal Geotechnical Engineer will draw on broad industry experience to apply diversified engineering techniques to complex situations and as needed rely on first principles and /or fundamental engineering theory to ensure practical solutions.

Responsibilities:
Develop and improve the application of company policies, procedures and systems for the area of water/tailings impoundment structures.
Produce scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and other related mining project studies.
Evaluate and participate in industry associations and/or regulatory processes related to geotechnical practice that may impact Teck’s business viability.
Rock slope design, rock storage management, and surface hydrology.
Develop geotechnical engineering standards and monitoring plans to assess site risk.
Assist projects, legacy properties and operating sites with assessment of geotechnical risk and potential mitigation.

Qualifications:
Minimum of 15 years of experience in the mining and/or consulting industry.
B.A.Sc. Geotechnical or Geological Engineering. Post graduate degree in a related field would be an asset.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in BC, or eligibility for registration is required.
Experience with rock mechanics design for open pit mining, (slope stability), waste dump design and monitoring, and/or geotechnical monitoring systems.
Familiarity with stability analysis and deformation type software.
Experience in tailings dam design and familiarity of tailings operations.
Experience in Project Evaluation at the Scoping, Prefeasibility and Feasibility stages to ongoing Operations stages.
Experience creating and making technical presentations and proven capabilities in in writing geotechnical reports and technical communications.
Able to cope with and manage change when dealing with projects.
Results-oriented with excellent organizational, planning and decision making skills.
Ability to build and maintain a strong communications network with peers, Project Managers, Mine Managers, Chief Engineers, and joint venture partner representatives.
Strong technical writing, group presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Operational experience would be an asset.
Willingness and ability to travel and work at mine sites for periods that may vary considerably.
