If you haven't already listened to this interview in Bejing of Norman Mackinnon,

please take the time to do so. It seems to contradict the last sentence of your post.

In the interview he mentions selling waste rock "run of the mill rock", which had a gold

content of 11/2 oz!

I wonder who bought the rock?
