Gold as a reserve currency worked back when there was more gold than debt in the world. As has been mentioned before, there may not be enough gold on the planet to cover the debt we have now. What we are facing is a crisis in confidence in the economic systems worldwide. The last time this happened was in October 1929. We all know what happened then, and gold was the standard for most world currencies.
