Your speculation is on the right track but you stopped too soon. Geos look at the core segments and get a good idea of what is there before they send it unless the metal is especially fine/disseminated. They choose what goes for analysis. They can pay for a "rush" if they want to. IR in most cases will simply give you the generic answer to the when question, they don't usually know what the Geo did nor the lab work load.
