The reality is Phil that took Geoff months to get the laser to work in continuous wave mode. They work at 3 inch wafer size using an old MBE which took a full 24 hours to get all the layers deposited. Then they cut those wafers into 1 inch die size glued them to a 3 inch silicon wafer and processed those dies one at a time. So it could have literally taken a 100 runs to get the VCSEL to operate in continuous mode at stable temperature.

The fact that they were able to get exceptional performance from the detector very early at Wavetek tells us that they know what they are doing.
