Thinking in terms of different materials and future materials it is highly probably I think that the POET epitaxy will evolve over time to take advantage of new materials as new needs and requirements occur. It is envisioned that POETs capability in GaAs can be just as disruptive using GaN in power applications.

What was immediately apparent to the new management was that POET has an extreme cost advantage in optical integration. The optical engine is very tiny, extremely powerful and has a very low cost to produce. Is the perfect fit for bonding to high performance silicon but that opportunity only exists now because 3d technology has evolved in ability and cost to make that a natural target for both POET and the silicon industry who are looking for a POET solution.

POET will evolve as technology and new materials become available that can take advantage of the POET structure. The company was surprised at just how good the detector is. I think the laser can be equally as impressive. There has been so much money spent to make silicon what it is today in electronic integration. POET takes advantage of all of that development but creates a new starting point for GaAs and GaN in photonic integration.

Below is a common statement in POET patents that is worth noting when we think about future materials that could be used in POETs evolution.

There have been described and illustrated herein several embodiments of an optoelectronic integrated circuit employing quantum dots embedded in one or more quantum wells and a method of fabricating the same. While particular embodiments of the invention have been described, it is not intended that the invention be limited thereto, as it is intended that the invention be as broad in scope as the art will allow and that the specification be read likewise. Thus, while particular group III-V material system and heterostructures have been disclosed, it will be appreciated that other III-V material systems and heterostructures can be used to realize the optoelectronic integrated circuitry as described herein. It will therefore be appreciated by those skilled in the art that yet other modifications could be made to the provided invention without deviating from its spirit and scope as claimed.
