Yes Smitty...I like your connection (no pun intended). The FET integration with the VCSEL is for modulating the VCSEL but the application to P and N channel HFET is clearly there to support optical clock distribution for processors.
Since POETs N type FET can reach extreme speeds the potential for much higher VCSEL digital data rates than the industry standard that POET is currently working on at 50Gb/s are also there. At the same time recall that the POET thyristor has both optical and electronic input and output and we get into the next generation of optical to optical conversions for data transfer internal to the chip and external to the chips. The possibilities are of course only limited by the imagination of the designers.
