Convention wisdom tells you that if a company’s whole business is tied to the optical market and a competing company can produce higher performance products for a small fraction of the cost it really becomes a necessity for survival to have access to that competing technology. Finisar and others could not afford the risk of not having access to the new (what did Ajit call it) very disruptive technology.

The question becomes one of. How soon do they need to make a commitment to ensure they can gain access? The next question would be how much would they be willing to pay to stay in business?
