folks, spec is that the upcoming iThing 3D camera tech is from LinX out of Israel.
that's why Apple bought them last April (it also filed this patent last summer)
there is mention of VCSEL usage in the PrimeSense patents (that are now Apple's, from Israel again, acquired in November 2013 -- same folks who did the sensor tech in Microsoft's Kinect)
fwiw, Apple's Tel Aviv research centre (roughly 400 employees) is where quite a lot of their sensor R&D happens.
production-wise, the latest "rumour" that I've heard is that FruitCo might be in talks with STM (STMicroelectronics NV) to use the 2C Grenoble foundry (in Crolles, France) for some proprietary new image, proximity and rangefinding sensors.
so. could there be future PTK ties to STM via el-Blev and the Israelis?
sure, maybe. dunno.
it took 3 years for the Primesense stuff to start to show up.
wait and see.
GLAL,
R.
PS: apparently, 3D cameras are aiming to become a $10B business.
ha. who knew?
(that's just the camera thingy, not the gadget it's in)
