  • Intel notified workers of companywide layoffs.
  • An unknown number of employees will be out of work July 15.
  • The company has about 11,000 workers in Arizona.

Intel Corp., one of Arizona's largest employers with an estimated 11,000 workers in Chandler, is laying off an unknown number of people amid a slow personal-computer market.

A copy of a June 15 letter given to employees, which was obtained by The Oregonian, says the workers have until July 15 to work, after which they will be provided with two months' base salary and four months of Intel-paid health-care coverage.

Spokesman Chuck Malloy in the company's Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters declined to comment.

"We don't comment on internal communications that are not intended for public consumption," he said Tuesday.

Intel has approximately 11,000 Arizona workers, ranking No. 7 on this year's Arizona Republic 100 list of the state's largest employers.

The letter to employees does not indicate how many workers are being released, but says they are those who earned low scores on annual performance reviews or stock plans.

Intel stock has fallen from more than $37 a share in December to less than $32 a share today.
