BAE is not necessarily the only military contractor we may be involved with. For example, here's a connection between Alfalight and Lockheed Martin. I think the take-away is that today's appointment reflects one more hook into the military side of things beyond BAE.

falight, a Madison company that makes high-performance laser systems, says it has been awarded a contract to provide its lasers to a U.S. defense subcontractor working on a high-level missile defense system.

The $3.7 million, 18-month contract is with Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials Co., which is producing a laser system for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) program headed by Lockheed Martin. The laser light technology is used to control missile flight events, as well as safeguard against possible accidents, Alfalight said in a news release.

Since 2005, the THAAD program has successfully intercepted missiles in each of its 11 attempts, and it is the only ballistic missile defense system capable of intercepting missiles both within and outside the earth’s atmosphere, Alfalight said.

“This contract is a valued vote of confidence from our customer and builds on Alfalight’s many years of success in high-performance laser systems for defense and security,” Mohan Warrior, president and chief executive, said, in the news release.

Lockheed Martin announced in September 2013 that it had received a multibillion-dollar contract to make elements of the THAAD system for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and the United Arab Emirates.
