Bang on jets!
It is easy to envision the 'consortium' to include military (BAE), consumer (Apple) and one or more commercial players(to be determined or announced)as their early adopters, with exclusivity based on their assistance in development within their respective segments. Commercial clients may include server, automotive, IoT markets.
Apple's interests have been focused within the consumer products area, the nominal exception being an Apple device within another 'device' in the form of on board computers and other Apple devices on automobiles. POET and PET provide them with multiple generations to create or acquire new consumer devices if they are up to the task.
Exclusivity within a segment may be sustained for a generation of chips, and each succeeding upgrade (memory, optical, smaller gate) would result in the release of exclusivity to the prior generation. They would get to maintain their advantage so long as POET wants to continue on this path.
Advantages for POET: large chunk of developmental costs absorbed by Apple, development path established, brand awareness as the leading edge technology, and access to what would be re-affirmed as the most well known brand in world. Each generation would get two major marketing releases, first with Apple, then with rest of the mobile/tablet world. The Apple relationship would ensure a premier valuation.
These advantages would largely apply within each of the segments.
