One of the biggest problems with silicon performance as measured by the ring oscilator jitter. As mentioned previously as silicon heats up the performance degrades this becomes a timing problem (creates jitter). When Stephane talks about the optical clock distribution in PET not only does it greatly reduce energy requirements but it provides for extremely high speeds and removes timing issues (jitter).
