U.S. housing starts tumble from nine-year high; permits suggest strength

U.S. homebuilding fell more than expected in November, tumbling from a nine-year high as construction activity declined broadly, the latest sign of slower economic growth in the fourth quarter. Groundbreaking on new housing projects dropped 18.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.09 million units, the Commerce Department said. Housing starts data are choppy month-to-month, with much of the volatility coming from the multi-family segment of the market.

The No. 1 trait all great leaders share

    Don't Retire Early

Ask five people what it means to retire early and you're likely to get five different answers. Some would consider leaving work before age 65 as early retirement, while others would argue that it has to happen before age 45. Regardless of how you quantify “early,” saying adios to work isn't necessarily the solution to a happy and fulfilling mid-life experience. Many people who long for early retirement may have never known true job satisfaction. A better goal for some may be to shoot for a mid-life career change instead of an early retirement. Why People Retire Early Why do people retire early? Sometimes it's unplanned: a layoff, a long-term illness or caring for a loved one. In these cases,

The Oil Mystery Behind Saudi Arabia’s Production Cut

Saudi Arabia surprised the world by helping to engineer an unexpectedly strong agreement from OPEC members to cut production by 1.2 million barrels per day, followed by additional cuts from non-OPEC members. While the two agreements incorporate cuts from a wide range of oil producers, Saudi Arabia will do much of the heavy lifting, cutting nearly 500,000 barrels per day and even promising to go further than that should the markets warrant steeper reductions. Depending on one’s perspective, Saudi Arabia demonstrated its diplomatic prowess and made OPEC relevant again, succeeding in talking up oil prices without sacrificing much.

Congo gold mine innovates to solve illegal mining dilemma

By Aaron Ross MONGBWALU, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - When Guy Robert Lukama looked out at thousands of illegal gold diggers hacking away at the verdant hills in remote northeastern Congo, he glimpsed opportunity where previous owners saw only an intractable problem. Lukama's former employer, South Africa's AngloGold Ashanti, had for years sought to develop the 3,260 square kilometre Mongbwalu concession but pulled out partly due to concern over the sprawling blue-tented camps full of miners. When he led a buyout of AngloGold's 86 percent stake in the Mongbwalu Gold Mine (MGM) last year, Lukama knew he couldn't chase them away if he was to succeed in mining any of the 2.5 million ounces of gold estimated to lie trapped in the earth.

Soros Was Right: China Currency Weakening To Seven

If Soros is still sitting on his China short made earlier in 2016, he’s going to get rewarded more handsomely next year. The Chinese yuan is going to seven. It’s not going to take much to push it there either. As of Friday, it was trading at 6.95 to the dollar and is down 6.5% year-to-date. Since the government opened its capital accounts and has been promoting yuan internationalization of the yuan in trade, more yuans have been flying out of the country than dollars coming in and converting into them. Chinese corporations and individuals are taking their money and investing abroad in everything from real estate to foreign mutual funds. The weaker currency is as much a reflection of that as it

Hong Kong benchmark interbank rates rose to the highest since March 2009 this week just as a cash crunch hit Chinese banks While the peg means that Hong Kong's monetary policy is dictated by the Fed, the spike in Hibor may have more to do with what's going on north of the border than across the Pacific. I have to be consulted on F1 team mate: Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes have an obligation to consult him on who should replace retired world champion Nico Rosberg as his Formula One team mate next season, but he will have no say in their ultimate decision. "But I don't have a say who it is." Mercedes have been seeking a replacement for Rosberg since the German stunned the sport by announcing his retirement five days after winning the title in Abu Dhabi at the end of November. The Briton, whose relationship with Rosberg was highly competitive, sometimes glacial and frequently fraught, has said he does not care who his team mate is but he clarified that in the interview as being "a little bit out of context".

From reputation to market value, this Indian bank has lost a lot post-demonetisation

The Narendra Modi government’s move to demonetise an overwhelming bulk of Indian currency notes in circulation has squeezed the country’s banking system to the limit. From the long queues at branches and ATMs, formed by cash-starved people, to overworked employees, lenders have borne the brunt of demonetisation over the past few weeks. One of them, however, has been in a particularly bad spot: Mumbai-based Axis Bank.

When Is it Time to Stop Saving for Retirement?

You’ve done all the right things – financially speaking, at least – to get ready for retirement. You started saving early to take advantage of the power of compounding, maxed out your 401(k) and individual retirement account (IRA) contributions every year, made smart investments, squirreled away money into additional savings, paid down debt and figured out how to maximize your Social Security benefits. Now what? When do you stop saving – and start enjoying the fruits of your labor? A Nice Problem to Have (But a Problem All the Same) Many people who have saved consistently for retirement have trouble making the transition from saver to spender when the time comes. Careful saving – for decades,

Five euro zone banks face payout cap after falling short of ECB demands

Five large euro zone banks face a cap on how much they can pay in dividends, bonuses and coupons next year because they have too little capital, the European Central Bank said on Thursday, a worrying sign for a sector struggling with meagre profits and unpaid loans. The ECB did not name the five banks, part of the roughly 130 it has supervised since becoming the bloc's watchdog in 2014 with the aim of preventing a repeat of the 2008-12 banking crisis. The ECB's annual review comes as lenders in Italy and other crisis-struck countries are under pressure to raise capital to cover losses from bad loans.
