Jim Chanos is the real deal. He is known for his shorting ideas. I doubt he is always right (I think he lost huge on shorting HP) but he commands huge respect from his peers. When he announces his new short people listen. Typically, Jim's shorting ideas are based on more "internal" fundamental issues at companies (like Enron).

This one sounds different. Jim's thesis on shorting Teck etc hangs completely on this statement in the article: "Well, if China does fall hard,..."

If China doesn't fall hard (i.e. Government there has immense power to fight/control a hard landing), or if commodity prices remain firm or improve anyway because of other emerging markets and North American economies improving or because of commodity supply disruptions, I would not want to be following Jim down this shorting path.

Besides, wouldn't it just be easier to short the more liquid commodities futures if Jim is so certain of China's dire prospects?
