Gjegjan Copper Project, Albania JV with ECHO-T shpk, Albania

The historic Gjegjan mine produced 5Mt of 3% Cu. A published exploited resource estimate quotes 6Mt at 3.51% Cu, 0.9% Zn and 0.07% Co. The Mine opened in 1961 and closed in 1993, and involved both underground and open pit mining. Historical records indicate that the cut off grade for mining was 1% and a smelter cutoff of 2.5% The geology is described as massive pyrite with silica and chalcopyrite.

ECHO-T performed a successful bioleach study at The Institute of Environmental Geology and Geoengineering in Rome, Italy in 2003. ECHO-T had taken sample in 2003 and was evaluated at 0.30% copper. (not 43-101 compliant)

CanBiomine hired GWP Consultants to prepare an initial 43-101 compliant report and make recommendation for a scope study to be implemented in spring 2009. Initial site visit was completed on September 20, 2008. A final report will be available in early December.

ABOUT BIOLEACHING

Bioleaching is the extraction of specific metals from sulphide minerals and refractory ores through the use of bacteria. Bioleaching technology used by Caldera has been successfully deployed by BacTech to extract gold and copper.

BacTech's technology takes bacteria cultured from the environment and applies them in a way that speeds up the natural process of sulphide degradation by up to 500,000 times. There is no "re-engineering" or manipulation of these natural bacteria, but BacTech uses its' knowledge and experience of how to isolate and apply the bacteria, and create the perfect environment for them to operate effectively. This converts a slow natural process into a commercial economic process for metal extraction, while protecting the environment by not using the alternative techniques such as roasting. The only byproduct of bioleaching is an inert iron or iron arsenate precipitate, which is environmentally benign.

The front-end of the technology can take low quality concentrates and process them through bioleach reactors to produce metals. Precious metals typical are removed from solids, and other metals such as copper reside in a liquor which can then be recovered through Eletrowinning process.
